Alfred “Alfie” Date (1906-2016) was not only the oldest man in Australia, but also a real life savior for hundreds of Penguins in Phillip Island Nature Park when an oil spill disaster strikes.
Alfred knit tiny sweaters for the Penguins not only to warm them up but to protect them from swallowing oil chunks while trying to clean their feathers.
Helped by nurses and other volunteers Alfred launched “Knits for Nature” program.
The Rehabilitation center took care of more than 400 Penguins in 2001, but now, they say, no more sweaters are needed :)
